Berlin (dpa / bb) - Almost eight years after a brutal attack on a jewelry store in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, the trial against one of the alleged perpetrators in the regional court has begun.

The 35-year-old is said to have entered the business masked with three accomplices.

They immediately attacked the shop owner's wife with irritant gas, according to the indictment read out at the beginning of the hearing on Monday.

The woman was also beaten.

In the attack in June 2013, the perpetrators are said to have smashed several showcases and stolen jewelry worth a total of around 70,000 euros.

The attacked woman suffered a broken nose and a cheekbone fracture.

In addition, she suffered psychological impairments, which subsequently led to the business being closed.

DNA traces found at the crime scene are said to have led to the defendant in 2019.

The 35-year-old, who has to serve several years in prison for other offenses in Belgium, was temporarily transferred to Germany by the authorities there for the current trial, it said on the edge.

At the beginning of the hearing, it was initially unclear whether the defendant would comment on the allegations.
