Pforzheim (AP) - The young Green candidate Felix Herkens has chased the party's direct mandate in the AfD stronghold of Pforzheim.

The parliamentary group leader of the Greens in the local council received 26.2 percent of the vote in the election on Sunday, his AfD opponent Bernd Grimmer 15.8.

In 2016, Grimmer was one of two AfD direct candidates with 24.2 percent in the state parliament.

Herkens studies social and communication sciences and sees his focus on social issues.

In the 2016 election, the Green politician Katrin Lechler narrowly missed victory in the constituency with 24.1 percent of the vote.

The FDP top candidate Hans-Ulrich Rülke received 16.1 percent of the votes in the Pforzheim constituency.

In 2016, the Liberals received 10.6 percent.
