Leading CDU politicians see the mask affair as a reason for the poor performance of the Christian Democrats.

CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak said that the affair had harmed his party.

There is also a lack of understanding and criticism of the corona crisis management.

According to Ziemiak, there was no change in mood in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg.

"It is the prime minister's personal successes," he says of the election results.

The Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has also attributed the CDU losses in the state elections to the mask business of members of the Bundestag of the Union.

Even if the parliamentary group tried to clear the table, "something always sticks," said the CDU politician on ZDF.

That people are upset about what can be seen in the election results "is more than understandable," said Kretschmer.

The CDU top candidate in Rhineland-Palatinate, Christian Baldauf, also gave the mask affair and the corona crisis responsibility for the election result.

"It's a bitter evening for us, we wanted a better result," said Baldauf in Mainz.

He announced that the CDU now wanted to form “a strong opposition”.
