The Greens with Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann won the state elections in Baden-Württemberg with a nationwide record result and can choose their coalition partners.

The previously co-governing Southwest CDU fell on Sunday in its former stronghold on the worst result in its history.

The green-black coalition could continue to govern, but the Greens also have the option of forming a traffic light alliance with the SPD and FDP.

According to an ARD extrapolation from the evening, a new edition of the green-red coalition, which ruled between 2011 and 2016, is also conceivable.

For the 72-year-old Kretschmann, it would be the third term in power.

He said he accepted the mandate to form a government with "gratitude and humility."

He will hold talks with the CDU, SPD and FDP.

First he wants to speak to the CDU, but this should not be taken as a sign.
