Bremen (dpa) - It almost seemed as if Robert Lewandowski would despair of all things Bayern Munich's favorite opponent.

Crossbar, post, Pavlenka - the Polish super striker simply did not get the ball over the goal line in Bremen's Weserstadion despite the best chances.

But giving up is not a term that exists in the vocabulary of the 32-year-old world footballer.

This is one of the reasons why Gerd Müller's record, which has been considered unattainable for decades, is now seriously shaking with 40 goals in one season.

Lewandowski was rewarded for his tenacity against home keeper Jiri Pavlenka on Saturday in the undisputed 3: 1 (2: 0) of Bayern at Werder Bremen.

In the 67th minute the ball fell at his feet after a corner.

The Pole reacted with lightning speed and pushed it into the Bremen case.

Hit number 32 this season - there are now only eight missing.

"Robert fights for his goals for the team in every game," said Thomas Müller, praising his offensive partner.

With 268 Bundesliga goals, Lewandowski drew level with Klaus Fischer in second place in the all-time scorer list.

"I am proud that I have scored 268 goals in the Bundesliga like the legendary Klaus Fischer," wrote Lewandowski on social media after the game.

The legendary Gerd Müller still seems unreachable in this ranking with 365 goals.

"He'll have to play for a few more years to break the record," said Leon Goretzka.

The national player had brought Bayern in the 22nd minute after a header extension from template king Müller in the lead.

Before the break, Serge Gnabry made everything clear again after a pass from Müller.

The rest was a show for Bayern and waiting for the everyday Lewandowski goal.

"It was a safe and more than deserved victory, which could have been even higher in the end," said Bayern coach Hansi Flick with satisfaction.

The ongoing speculation about his person as the successor to the national coach Joachim Loew, who left after the European Championship in the summer, Flick turned again in Bremen.

"I've said everything about it, I have a contract until 2023," said Flick, who preferred to focus on his team and goal scorer Lewandowski.

"He has drawn level with Klaus Fischer, so a special compliment to Robert," said Flick of his goalscorer.

With the exception of RB Leipzig, Lewandowski has now scored against all opponents this Bundesliga season.

With a goal in the top game in Leipzig on April 3, he can complete the collection - as the first Bundesliga player.

"Records are only there to look back on after your career," said Müller of Lewandowski's hunt for top marks.

The here and now is more important, said the possible soon-to-be-national player.

"He should please score again in the next game," said Müller succinctly to his team-mate on the way.
