Hamburg / Bremerhaven (dpa) - Cast off for the Hamburg museum ship "Cap San Diego": According to the operator, the largest, navigable museum cargo ship in the world started its journey to Bremerhaven on Sunday afternoon.

Your destination is the “Bredo Dry Docks” shipyard.

The white ship should arrive there on Monday around 7:00 a.m., as managing director Ann-Kathrin Cornelius told the German Press Agency.

The list of repair and maintenance work is long.

It includes around 200 points.

Above all, this includes repairing the tanks so that they are also protected against corrosion in the future.

In addition, the volunteer “Cap San Diego” team wants to prepare the renewal of the wooden decks and remove rust and preserve loading gear and loading booms.

Meanwhile, the shipyard employees are making the traditional ship fit for the ship's Tüv, i.e. the renewal of the class.

This is due every five years.

This also includes removing dirt and shells from the historic cargo ship and giving it a new coat of paint.

"Cap San Diego", which has been located on the Überseebrücke in the port of Hamburg since 2003, is one of the maritime landmarks of the Hanseatic city.

The ship normally sets off for museum trips several times a year with up to 500 passengers.

In 2020 she stayed in port due to corona.

The volunteer crew is therefore very much looking forward to the trip, said Cornelius.

"Finally something is happening here again."

Around 1.4 million euros are planned for the repair work.

About half of this comes from the federal government's monument protection program, the rest is financed by the ship's owner, the Hamburg Admiralty Foundation.

When the "Cap San Diego" returns from the shipyard on April 8th, she will be stylish again on the 60th anniversary of her keel-laying (April 10th, 1961) and ready for the next few years.
