Mainz (dpa / lrs) - For the first time, the Greens won a direct mandate in a state election in Rhineland-Palatinate.
According to the preliminary result on Sunday, the Green Party member Katharina Binz won the constituency of Mainz I with 29.6 percent. SPD applicant Johannes Klomann received 29.2 percent of the vote.
Binz has been in the state parliament since 2017, before she was state chairman of her party.
The constituencies in Rhineland-Palatinate have been redesigned.
Before the redesign, Klomann had won the constituency in the 2016 election.
The constituency of Mainz I is one of three that comprise the state capital.
