Hanover (dpa / lni) - The SPD and CDU parliamentary groups in the state parliament are calling for a mandatory beekeeping license, with which even hobby beekeepers have to prove their basic expertise in dealing with bee colonies.

A corresponding motion for a resolution will be discussed for the first time in the plenary session next Wednesday.

The reason given is that experts have long been calling for expert knowledge to be checked in order to better protect honey bees and safeguard beekeeping.

The consequences of ignorance among amateur beekeepers could be devastating.

Among other things, a lack of food could become a problem for the bee colonies, but the prevention of various diseases is sometimes neglected.

As stated in the application, more and more people were enthusiastic about beekeeping and wanted to actively contribute to the protection and preservation of bees.

The trend towards smaller beekeepers with only one or a few bee colonies continued.

Despite this enormously important importance, beekeeping is hardly regulated and only determined by a few laws.

Anyone could buy a colony of bees and put it in the garden.

The hobby beekeeper does not need any permit to set up beehives on his property, whether in the garden, on the garage, on the roof of a high-rise building or on the balcony.

He just has to register the beekeeping.
