Why are men more at risk than women when infected with the emerging corona virus "Covid-19"? And is there a relationship to the immune system? The answer is provided by a German virologist.

During a "podcast" presented by "Radio North Germany" (NDR), German virologist Zandra Ziizek explained the reasons why men contracting the Coronavirus take a more dangerous course, compared to women, according to a report published by Deutsche Welle.

As many virologists have long explained, men and women are infected with the Coronavirus at roughly the same rate.

However, the following was noted:

  • Men are more likely to develop Covid-19 disease more seriously, compared to women.

  • Men are more likely to die from Covid-19 disease than women, as many statistics and studies have shown.

German virologist Zandra Zsezek explained why this happened, based on an analysis published in the journal Nature Communications.

"In Germany, the number of men who died as a result of infection with the Coronavirus exceeded twice the number of women in the age group between 40 and 69 years," Tszik says.

Higher mortality

According to the analysis published in the journal "Nature Communications", the death rate from corona in men compared to women is higher by one-third to two-thirds, and the probability of having to be hospitalized after infection with the Coronavirus is 20% higher for men.

And the German virologist attributes that, because men are more susceptible to risk factors causing the disease.

"According to the statistics, men smoke more than women, and men consume more alcoholic beverages than women," Tszik said, stressing that smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages are among the most important risk factors for diseases.

Tszik continued, explaining that "women have a better immune system due to genetic and hormonal factors," which makes women have stronger immune responses to viral infection.
