Dresden / Zwickau (dpa / sn) - Large companies in Saxony are preparing for corona vaccinations of their workforce by company doctors.

These include Volkswagen, Globalfoundries and BMW.

"We can hardly wait for the vaccine to be available that we want to offer local employees," said a spokesman for the Dresden chip manufacturer Globalfoundries.

Thanks to the annual flu vaccination, the plant has the necessary logistical experience and a company doctor.

The plant is also in contact with the city on the subject of vaccination.

The company currently employs around 3,200 people in Dresden.

Since the vaccination campaign in Germany has been slow so far, the employers' association BDA and the industry association BDI have approached the federal government to urge faster vaccinations and to offer support in the form of company doctors.

Volkswagen in Saxony is also preparing: the company is prepared to be able to carry out vaccinations in consultation with the authorities, said a spokesman.

Seven in-house doctors and nine nurses are already there.

Corona rapid tests have also been carried out for some time.

"We want to help Germany get vaccinated faster in the next few weeks."

In Saxony alone, Volkswagen can directly reach around 11,000 people by vaccinating its employees.

Vaccination is the most important lever so that the economy and social life can gradually return to normal.

If sufficient vaccine is available, employees should be able to be vaccinated according to the guidelines according to risk groups.

A project team is currently working on a company's own vaccination strategy for BMW - including for the Leipzig site, where the car manufacturer employs around 5,300 people.

The employees should be encouraged to vaccinate, but the decision is made by everyone, emphasized a spokeswoman.

The in-house vaccination could start if the policy involved company doctors in the Germany-wide vaccination campaign.

Then BMW wants to rely on in-house medical staff and company doctors to start vaccinating.
