Münster (dpa) - According to their own statements, Greenpeace activists have protested in front of churches in 46 cities across Germany against the CDU's coal policy.

The Immerather Cathedral, which was destroyed for lignite mining in 2018, was shown in each case, Greenpeace announced on Saturday.

The vigils were held in front of the Cologne Cathedral, the Lambertikirche in Münster, the Dresden Frauenkirche and the Aachen Cathedral.

Greenpeace calls for a quicker exit from lignite.

"If a Christian Democrat like Armin Laschet, of all people, lets down churches for coal, then that sums up the Union's ruthless climate policy," said Deborah Grosswagen from Greenpeace Münster.

The church in Keyenberg is now threatened with demolition, the foundation of which is older than that of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

In the Rhineland, more than 45,000 people have already been resettled for open-cast lignite mining and over 100 villages and hamlets, including centuries-old churches and cultural monuments, have been destroyed.
