Berlin (dpa) - Franz Beckenbauer can imagine record national player Lothar Matthäus as the future national soccer coach.

"I definitely trust Lothar to do the job," said the former national coach, under whom Matthäus became world champion as a player in 1990, in an interview with the "Bild" newspaper.

"He has worldwide experience and has developed a lot."

Matthäus and Bayern coach Hansi Flick are both very good candidates, Beckenbauer said in response to a question.

Flick would fit, Joachim Löw's former assistant knows the German Football Association inside out.

"But I'm not sure whether Bayern will let him go ..." said Beckenbauer.

The 75-year-old Beckenbauer has no concerns that Löw could become a so-called “lame duck” after his resignation.

«Jogi Löw has so much authority.

I don't see any problem there. "

With a club coach, an early departure can be a problem if cliques form in the team.

"But it's completely different with the national team," said Beckenbauer.

Löw had announced this week that he would give up his position as national coach after the EM in the summer.

After the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he succeeded Jürgen Klinsmann.
