La Paz (dpa) - In Bolivia, according to her own statements, an arrest warrant has been issued against the former interim president Jeanine Áñez.

"The political persecution has begun," wrote the conservative politician on Twitter on Friday.

At the same time she accused the ruling left party MAS of returning to the "style of dictatorship" in the South American country.

In addition, she linked to an arrest warrant for terrorism, sedition and conspiracy, which she claims also affects several ministers in her previous interim government.

Former Ministers Álvaro Coimbra (Justice) and Rodrigo Guzmán (Energy) were reportedly arrested in the Beni Department and taken to the Forensic Investigation Institute in La Paz to testify.

Áñez escaped arrest because she was not found in her home in the city of Trinidad.

The newspaper «El Deber» reported speculation that the ex-interim president had left the place in a small plane.

Áñez had become interim president after head of state Evo Morales resigned after the election in October 2019 under pressure from the military.

He was accused of electoral fraud.

Morales went abroad and an interim government headed by the arch-conservative politician Áñez took over.

Morales' supporters called this a coup.

The MAS candidate Luis Arce then won a presidential election that was postponed several times in October.

This enabled Morales to return from Argentina.

In the past few days, arrest warrants had been issued against Bolivia's former police commanders Yuri Calderón and Williams Kaliman, the former commander in chief of the armed forces.

Human rights activists criticize the fact that the Bolivian judiciary is repeatedly used by various sides to persecute political opponents.
