Berlin (dpa / bb) - After the violent death of a heavily pregnant woman, a 33-year-old was found guilty of murder and rape.

The Berlin district court sentenced the man to life imprisonment on Friday.

The presiding judge explained that he raped the 31-year-old woman, who was eight months pregnant, in her apartment in May 2020 and then strangled, strangled or otherwise obstructed her airways.

The young woman's body was discovered about four days after the alleged crime in her apartment in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg.

She was "wrapped in layers of towels and blankets," it said in the judgment.

Family members and a friend had previously alerted the police because they could not reach the 31-year-old by phone for days.

Officials found the body in the two-room apartment.

The German defendant was arrested in early June 2020 and has been in custody since then.

According to investigations, the trained system mechanic had been an acquaintance of the 31-year-old Germans for several years - not her partner and not the child's father.

"He had a strong sexual desire," said the presiding judge.

For the man who had not had a partner for years, that was the motive for the rape.

Later he tried meticulously and for days to cover up the traces of his deeds.

The defendant had denied the allegations.

Although he visited the 31-year-old in her apartment, he did not attack her.

They would have made a “cozy evening” and also physically approached, he had explained in the process.

After leaving the apartment for two hours to get drugs, he found the woman dead on the couch.

In a panic, he packed the body.

With the decision, the court followed the prosecution's request.

The defense had demanded an acquittal.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.
