The Italians are used to Etna erupting from time to time, but lately it has been an unusually high level of activity.

During the day, it also rained ash and rocks over several nearby villages.

- It stings in the eyes and stings in the throat, says SVT's Italy correspondent Jennifer Wegerup who is on Scilien.

In 43 municipalities, a state of emergency has been declared and the governor of Sicily is now asking for help from the Italian government.
