Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Two days before the state elections on Sunday in Rhineland-Palatinate, CDU top candidate Christian Baldauf and CDU federal chief Armin Laschet have again clearly distinguished themselves from the mask affair of members of the Bundestag of the Union.

"That has certainly harmed us," Baldauf admitted on Friday evening in a digital discussion with five CDU prime ministers including the North Rhine-Westphalian head of government Laschet.

Politicians in particular have a special obligation to be transparent - it is not for them to “enrich oneself”.

Laschet said: “This is unbearable for us.

This will also have consequences for the future. "

It could not be tolerated "that MPs take advantage of emergencies for their own benefit".

Shortly before the state elections, however, the citizens had to be told that this was an "event of the day".

According to the head of the CDU, those eligible to vote will decide "on the future until 2026" - the new legislative period will last five years.

For this, the CDU had "developed many good ideas".

Both Christian Democrats had condemned once again when MPs collected commissions for arranging mask deliveries.

At the same time, Baldauf presented the SPD in Rhineland-Palatinate with the years-old affair surrounding Markus Held.

The Rhineland-Hessian SPD member of the Bundestag has to answer for allegations of infidelity and fraud from May 4th onwards.

The CDU Prime Ministers Tobias Hans (Saarland), Daniel Günther (Schleswig-Holstein), Michael Kretschmer (Saxony) and Volker Bouffier (Hesse) were also involved in the digital debate.
