Friedrichsdorf (dpa / lhe) - The Hessian Farmers' Association is expecting the first asparagus of the season in March.

"It could work before Easter, but then only small amounts under foil cover," said association spokesman Bernd Weber of the German press agency.

"In February the sun shone frequently, at the same time the heavy frost provided the necessary cold stimulus, that was important."

Now it depends on the coming weeks.

«The warmth leaves a lot to be desired at the moment.

Asparagus plants need at least 12 degrees Celsius to grow. "

About the price, Weber said that if you want asparagus early, you have to dig deeper into your pocket.

"I don't know whether we can get under 20 euros per kilo for early asparagus."

But every producer has to calculate that for himself.

"However, the enjoyment is much higher when asparagus comes fresh from the home region."

As far as foreign seasonal workers are concerned, one hears from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture that the entry of harvest workers is secured by land, Weber said.

"Last year, entry by air was an expensive emergency because of the corona pandemic."

This does not seem to be an issue this year.

"The situation is better than 2020."
