Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has distributed 5.2 million free FFP2 masks to households in the past few weeks.

The state chancellery in Schwerin announced that the last copies were delivered on Friday.

The masks had been put in the mailboxes by the newspaper deliverers since February 9th.

Each household was reportedly given six FFP2 protective masks.

Around 850,000 mask packages have been delivered.

"The FFP2 masks are an important protection for the people in the country, especially against the much more contagious virus mutation," said Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD).

According to her, the action had started in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district because the number of infections there in February was significantly higher than in other districts.

The last masks were distributed in the Vorpommern-Rügen district on Friday.

According to the State Chancellery, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is so far the only state that has distributed masks to all citizens.
