Kellmünz / Kempten (dpa / lby) - After a fire on an agricultural property in the Swabian district of Neu-Ulm, the damage runs into the millions.

The fire broke out on Thursday in a machine hall and soon spread to an adjacent building with combined heat and power units of a biogas plant, the police said.

The two buildings were completely destroyed.

The police initially estimated the damage to be at least two million euros.

According to police, the roof of a gas storage facility was damaged by the heat, causing gas to escape and ignite immediately.

At times there was a risk of explosion, a police spokesman in Kempten said on Thursday.

Why the fire broke out in the hall near Kellmünz an der Iller was initially unclear.

The owner of the biogas plant suffered smoke inhalation while trying to extinguish the fire, and his wife suffered a shock.

According to the police, other people were not in danger because the facility was about a kilometer from the nearest houses.
