Berbersdorf (dpa / sn) - The retail chain Edeka is expanding its logistics center on Autobahn 4 near Berbersdorf.

Around 92.8 million euros will be used for expansion and renovation, as the Edeka group of companies in Northern Bavaria-Saxony-Thuringia announced on Friday.

The expansion should be completed by the end of 2023, and the existing storage area will then grow from around 48,000 square meters by 28,000 square meters.

Picking and storage areas are to be partially automated in the future.

According to logistics director Rainer Kämpgen, the areas for fresh goods, frozen food and dry goods will be given more space.

A storage area of more than 10,000 square meters is also being built right next to the logistics center to supply fresh food counters.

With the expansion, the retail chain is responding to the growing number of products in the range as well as increasing sales in the region, and the opening of additional stores is planned in Saxony.
