Microforests are on the rise.

Faced with the urgency of climate change, projects of this type are multiplying in Toulouse.

After that of Rangueil, a 200 m2 microforest will emerge near the George-Sand college, along the road to Saint-Simon.

Friday morning, representatives of the Haute-Garonne departmental council, project leader, with the Toulouse en Transition association, planted the first trees of this future island of greenery eventually composed of 600 plants.

Seventeen local country species

The plants were selected in order to form a plant association representative of the territory and from the characteristics of the soil, determined by the analyzes carried out by the departmental laboratory 31 Eva.

Thus, 17 local country species including seven tree species such as hornbeam, maple, ash or cherry were selected.

Mulching of the soil and maintenance for the first three years will be provided by the departmental council.

The objective of this microforest is to improve air quality, limit heat islands, runoff and constitute a reservoir for local biodiversity.

The entire project is funded by the Haute-Garonne departmental council for an amount of 20,000 euros.
