His story, which can lead to a smile, has earned him a summons to justice.

A 19-year-old man, living in Saint-Priest, near Lyon, was summoned by the police this week and taken into custody for facts of "false declaration and destruction by fire".

The man went to the police station last September to report the theft of his car.

The vehicle had been found set on fire on a roundabout in Caluire by firefighters, the night before his declaration.

The technical investigations carried out subsequently made it possible to establish that the motorist was present in Caluire half an hour before the discovery of his charred car, Lyon police said on Thursday.

A complaint filed for the degradation of the roundabout

Summoned by the police, the young man explained that he had consumed laughing gas that night while driving and had lost control of his car.

In front of his damaged vehicle, he then decided to set it on fire to make the insurance work.

A lie and a very unnecessary crime since the suspect was not insured at the time of the facts, according to departmental security.

He will have to explain himself to justice next October during an appearance in recognition of prior guilt.

The company operating the northern ring road has also filed a complaint for damage to the roundabout on which the car was set on fire.
