A new patient study by the University Clinic Hamburg-Eppendorf confirms that a corona infection is much more dangerous than seasonal flu.
Among the immunocompromised patients, those with a Covid 19 infection had a higher hospital mortality rate of 33.3 percent than the patients with seasonal influenza (11.6 percent), according to the study presented on Thursday.
At the same time, the data show that younger Covid 19 patients with minor comorbidities can also become seriously ill.
Covid-19 patients had to spend an average of 26 days in the hospital, those with seasonal influenza only 17 days.
Covid-19 patients also needed oxygen therapy more often.
40 percent of them had to be transferred to the intensive care unit, but only 20 percent of those with the flu.
The observations would coincide with the results of national data surveys by the Robert Koch Institute, said senior physician and co-author Julian Schulze zur Wiesch.

The study compared the disease courses of 166 Covid-19 patients treated in the university clinic and 255 patients with seasonal influenza.
The results were published in the specialist magazine "Scientific Reports".
