Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Around two million young eels - so-called glass eels - are to be released this year in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as part of an action funded by the state and the European Union.

This is intended to strengthen the population of the animals, as the inland fisheries association of the country announced on Thursday.

The animals with a total weight of 625 kilograms are therefore delivered from France and distributed over 67 individual bodies of water, from which the adult animals can migrate towards the sea.

According to the information, 16 companies have jointly registered for the corresponding funding.
