Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The future of the ailing shipyards in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is once again preoccupying the state parliament in Schwerin.

Two motions have been submitted for today's meeting (9 a.m.).

Both the SPD and CDU coalition factions and the left-wing faction in the opposition expressly commit to preserving the shipbuilding companies.

The shipyards in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund got into financial difficulties as a result of the corona pandemic and are now dependent on state aid to survive the crisis.

The Asian parent company Genting Hong Kong took over MV Werften in 2016 to build cruise ships for its own needs.

But with the corona-related interruption in cruise shipping at the beginning of 2020, one of the Group's most important sources of income collapsed, with consequences for the shipyards as well.

In order to get under the federal economic stabilization fund, a sustainable continuation concept is required, but it has been overdue for months.

The MPs have also received motions on, among other things, cross-border cooperation in the metropolitan region of Szczecin, insect protection, equal opportunities for women and men and the financing of care.
