Plauen / Dresden (dpa / sn) - The state government is preparing a new protection and level concept for schools in regions with a high infection rate.

The aim is to prevent recurring closings from a certain corona incidence, said Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) in an online conference on Thursday evening.

Such a concept is being prepared for the next Corona Protection Ordinance.

This is about certain test and mask concepts as well as other teaching models.

For the Vogtland, however, schools will not open before Easter.

That would be a «fire accelerator» in the current situation, said Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU).

The goal is that after the holidays the lessons can continue on site.

If the incidence remains high, daily tests must also be considered, said Kretschmer.

The Vogtlandkreis is a corona hotspot in Saxony and is one of the regions with the highest levels of infection nationwide.

According to figures from the Robert Koch Institute, the weekly incidence on Thursday was around 227 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days.

That is three times as high as the national average (69).

However, Kretschmer referred to progress in the fight against the pandemic in Vogtland.

"In the past few days, 40,000 people have been tested," he said.

360 infected people who had not yet shown any symptoms were identified and quarantined.

In this way, many more infections could have been prevented, stressed Saxony's head of government.

In addition to the tests, the country wants to force vaccination in the region.

In the two vaccination centers, capacities would be increased from 1250 to 2000 vaccinations per day, said Köpping.

In addition, the number of vaccination buses is to be increased and the 250 family doctors in the district are to be involved in the campaign.

The new vaccination ordinance makes it possible to deviate from the previously established vaccination sequence in the region.

How long it will take to vaccinate the more than 200,000 inhabitants, however, Köpping has not yet been able to say.

"I am optimistic that almost all doctors will take part," said the head of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Saxony, Klaus Heckemann.

According to his calculations, an additional 6,000 vaccinations could be given in the Vogtland every day.

"It just depends on the vaccine."
