Moscow (dpa) - AfD parliamentary group leader Alice Weidel called for the same opportunities for the Russian corona vaccine Sputnik V in Germany as for other vaccines during a visit to Moscow.

"We hope that every vaccine, no matter where it comes from, has the same chances of approval in the EU," said Weidel, referring to the testing procedure at the European Medicines Agency EMA for Sputnik V. This Thursday, Weidel and hers want Group colleagues Robby Schlund and Petr Bystron meet those responsible for the vaccine.

Russia repeatedly warns of a political bias against its vaccine because of numerous conflicts with the West.

A meeting of the AfD representatives is planned with a scientist from the Moscow Gamaleja research center, which Sputnik V developed, and with the head of the state direct investment fund RDIF, Kirill Dmitrijew, who is responsible for the international marketing of the preparation.

The visit is not planned in the research laboratory.

According to reports, the AfD politicians want to get an idea of the fight against the corona virus in Russia, but do not want to be vaccinated themselves.

Volunteers can also get vaccinated against the corona virus in shopping centers or at the opera in the Russian capital.

In this huge country, there are hardly any restrictions on public life due to the pandemic.

However, some Russian regions complain about a lack of vaccine.

Following the example of other countries, Weidel advocated checking the approval of Sputnik V at national level in Germany if the EMA procedure should drag on.

What is needed is freedom of choice when it comes to vaccines and information about the nature and mode of action of the vaccine.

"I hope that Sputnik V has the same chances of approval as other vaccines," she said.

Weidel wanted to leave Moscow on Thursday.

In the EU, Sputnik is already being used in Hungary without EMA approval.

According to Russian information, the preparation is approved in almost 50 countries.

RDIF boss Dmitriev had recently said that Russia would be able to provide the EU with around 50 million doses of its vaccine from the summer - after the end of mass vaccination in its own country.

Negotiations are also under way about production facilities in the EU.

Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow also campaigned for the Sputnik V vaccine to be ordered.

"For me, the Sputnik vaccine is a great opportunity to return to normalcy more quickly," said the left-wing politician of the Funke media group (Thursday).

"I appeal to the federal government to make it clear to the EU that the appropriate vaccine quantities should now be ordered from the Sputnik producers."
