Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - After the corona-related school closings for months, Education Minister Marco Tullner rejected demands for regular Saturday classes.

He was grateful that the teachers had mastered the considerable stress of face-to-face teaching in the final classes and distance operations for all other grades, said the CDU politician on Thursday at a debate in the state parliament.

It is a matter of realistically assessing the situation before additional burdens such as Saturday classes are imposed on the schools.

Previously, the AfD parliamentary group had requested in an application, among other things, to extend the lessons to the additional weekday in order to catch up on missed learning material.

The Left called for classwork and tests to be shut down this and the next school year.

After the months of abstinence, learning for the head is more important than checking for the paper, said left parliamentary group leader Thomas Lippmann.

Both opposition factions called for financial support to families who want to take advantage of the tutoring offers.

"I can only reply to the demand to subsidize additional funding offers in addition to regular lessons that it is the task of the school to ensure that the curriculum is fulfilled," replied Tullner.

His ministry is looking into whether schools could offer additional learning opportunities during the holidays.

Work is also being done to make prospective teachers more committed to teaching and learning opportunities alongside their studies.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the schools had been in emergency operation since mid-December and only offered daily face-to-face lessons for the final classes.

All other age groups did not return to the limited classroom teaching until March 1st and until then learned exclusively with assignments and online offers for at home.
