Luxembourg (dpa) - In the dispute over the state funding of the planned Fehmarnbelt tunnel between Denmark and Germany, the EU Commission faces defeat before the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

The responsible ECJ expert recommended on Thursday that the appeal of the Brussels authority against a judgment of the first instance should be declared inadmissible.

The decision of the ECJ is expected in a few weeks.

The so-called fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt is a planned 20-kilometer-long rail and car tunnel between the German Puttgarden and the Danish Rødby.

The formal start of construction was in January.

Completion is announced for 2029.

Several ferry operators are suing the state aid announced by Denmark for Femern A / S, which is responsible for planning, building and operating the fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt.

The shipping companies criticize the distortion of competition.

Your lawsuit is directed against the EU Commission, which did not intervene in 2015.

In 2018, the EU court ruled the shipping companies right on important points.

According to the opinion of the competent Advocate General Giovanni Pitruzzella, this judgment could stand.

However, according to the ECJ, further lawsuits are pending against the aid, so that the legal dispute could drag on for years.
