Mainz (dpa / lrs) - According to the state data protection officer, companies and authorities throughout Rhineland-Palatinate are affected by a security gap in Microsoft's e-mail system.

Since the end of last week, several reports of data breaches have already been received, the state commissioner's office announced on Thursday in Mainz.

Anyone who operates an Exchange server from Microsoft should immediately install the security updates provided by Microsoft.

The BSI published a first security warning about the vulnerability last Friday.

"Affected are organizations of all sizes," it says there.

Exchange is used by thousands of companies, government agencies and educational institutions as a platform for mail exchange and collaboration.

In the event of a successful attack via the vulnerabilities, it is possible to access data from the e-mail system.
