Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - The cornerstones of a hydrogen strategy in Saarland should be available by autumn of this year.

This was communicated by the partners in a consulting project that were commissioned by the Saarland state government to develop such a strategy.

"We are convinced: For the industrial state Saarland, hydrogen can be the technological bridge to an economically successful and sustainable future," said Economics Minister Anke Rehlinger (SPD) on Thursday.

The engineering company Auto und Verkehr IAV (Berlin) is in charge of the project.

Together with two partners, "the basis for building a regional hydrogen economy in southwest Germany" should be laid, the IAV announced.

By autumn, recommendations should also be drawn up on where and in what quantities hydrogen should be produced or purchased, how it can be transported and for which industries it can be used.

This also includes the question of where there should be gas stations.

Among other things, the transport of the hydrogen through special lines will “break new ground”, announced the IAV.

Among other things, the Saarland relies on the production of “green steel”, which is to be produced in an environmentally friendly manner with hydrogen.

Another focus is the use of hydrogen in buses, commercial vehicles, passenger cars and trains.

The establishment of a hydrogen economy is one of the major tasks on the way to a CO2-neutral economy and an "indispensable component of the mobility transition," it said.

Since the federal government's national hydrogen strategy was adopted in summer 2020, the Saarland has been relying more and more on hydrogen as an energy carrier and energy store.
