A 26-year-old youngster, practicing base-jump, this extreme sport of jumping from a great height, from a cliff for example, was rescued by firefighters after having fallen in an Ariège river.
Warned by a friend of the victim, the rescuers had to pull him out of the water before providing him with first aid and then evacuating him by helicopter to the Toulouse University Hospital.
This rescue led to a large deployment of resources.
The high mountain gendarmerie platoon intervened, and a psychological unit was mobilized.
An investigation has been opened into this rare accident.
According to France Bleu Occitanie, the base-jumper's parachute did not open after jumping from the top of a cliff.
An investigation was opened to determine the causes of this failure.
