The Government of Russia has decided to slow down access to Twitter after

accusing it of not removing pornographic content and other prohibited content such

as suicide attempts by teenagers and messages referring to drug use.

This has been announced by the Russian communications regulator,

Roskomnadzor,

in a statement that warns that access could be completely blocked if Twitter does not remove such prohibited content.

The move comes a day after the Russian regulator announced

lawsuits against Twitter, Google, Facebook, TikTok and Telegram

for failing to remove posts about last month's unauthorized protests against the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.



From today the Russian authorities will slow down access to Twitter, which will work slower on all mobile devices and on half of the computers.

3% of Russians use this platform.



Thanks to a 2019 law, Russian authorities have designed a system that they say would allow Russia to completely disconnect from the internet if it feels under attack.

Moscow has been mounting pressure against foreign social media for months.

Roskomnadzor has warned that other services could also be subject to restrictions if they do not conform to the country's guidelines.

The Russian parliament warned that Facebook could be the next, reports RIA Novosti.



The Kremlin today urged international social media to comply with the requirements of the Russian authorities.

The American social network since 2017

has ignored more than 28,000 message deletion requests

, according to Roskomnadzor.



President Vladimir Putin recently criticized the big companies that own US social media.

During his speech at the World Economic Forum he called them monopolies and questioned whether they act in the public interest.



Russia tried to block Telegram years ago for not sharing its encryption information, but was unable to technically enforce the block and eventually gave up.

Telegram works normally but

LinkedIn was banned years ago and does not work in Russia.
