Budapest (AP) - instead of catching up: Julian Nagelsmann lost the coaching duel with the ailing Jürgen Klopp and failed prematurely with RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

The Saxons lost the second leg of the last 16 against Liverpool on Wednesday evening in Budapest with 0: 2 (0: 0).

After the 0: 2 from the first duel, the season on Europe's largest football stage for Leipzig is over, Liverpool can hope for the next triumph in the Champions League after 2019.

A successful counterattack was enough for Liverpool to deserve to take the lead.

Mohamed Salah (70th) took all hope from Leipzig, four minutes later Sadio Mané made things clear.

The two superstars had already scored both goals in the first leg of Liverpool FC, who had lost six home games in a row in the English Premier League.

Despite the missed repetition of the premier class fairy tale - in the previous year Leipzig had advanced to the semifinals - RB still has the chance of two titles.

The team is in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup and is second in the Bundesliga.

There it comes to the possibly decisive game against champions Bayern Munich at Easter.

In the Puskas Arena, Nagelsmann brought Emil Forsberg back to the starting line-up for the first time after his knee injury.

The Swedish international should generate pressure in the attack alongside Yussuf Poulsen.

But instead of a furious start in Leipzig, Liverpool took control of Hungary's national stadium.

There was no sign of a crisis among the British.

As in the first leg, Dani Olmo suddenly had the Leipzig leadership on his feet.

But the shot of the Spanish international (10th) was saved by LFC keeper Alisson Becker.

As a result, despite 60 percent possession of the ball, RB found it difficult to find gaps in the English champions' solid defense.

Instead, Liverpool was extremely dangerous almost every time in front of the Leipziger Tor.

Diogo Jotas (19) headed from a corner defused RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi just as terrific as the shot from Salah (24) after a counterattack.

Five minutes later, Dayot Upamecano was there in front of the bullet-ready superstar from Egypt.

Nagelsmann reacted, dissolved the double six and ordered captain Marcel Sabitzer further forward.

This enabled RB to increase the pressure.

However, the Saxons did not play more than one shot from Forsberg (32nd), which just missed the goal.

On the other hand, it was Jota (41st), who had moved into the team for the injured Roberto Firmino, who failed to Gulacsi.

Nagelsmann increased the pressure and brought in striker Alexander Sörloth for playmaker Kevin Kampl.

The next big chance, however, was again Jota (55th), who was again the loser in the duel with Gulacsi.

Leipzig continued to find it difficult to provide any danger at all.

So Nagelsmann drew the next joker, Poulsen and Forsberg had to give way to Justin Kluivert and Hee-chan Hwang after an hour.

Hwang initiated the greatest opportunity in Leipzig to date.

After a cross from the South Korean (66th) Sörloth headed the ball to the crossbar.

But then Liverpool finally used one of their counterattacks, Salah gave Gulacsi no chance after a pass from Jota.

Shortly afterwards, the substitute Divock Origi served the completely uncovered Mané.
