Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Because of the corona pandemic, the Hamburg economy wants to invest less abroad this year - and if so, then especially in Europe.

This is the result of a survey by the Chamber of Commerce.

Almost a third of the companies active abroad (31 percent) said they were spending less money outside of Germany this year, as the chamber announced on Tuesday.

By contrast, 22 percent wanted to invest more.

The difference between higher and lower expenditure thus reached a negative value of minus 9, while it was plus 18 in the previous year.

According to the survey, if investments are made, it is mainly in the euro zone.

Almost 71 percent of the companies described this as the most important investment area - almost 2.5 points more than a year ago.

This is followed by China (22.0 percent / minus 3.5 points), the rest of the EU, Switzerland, Norway (21.9 / plus 3.5), Asia without China (21.3 / plus 4.8) and North America (16.1 / minus 6.9).

"Despite a slight recovery in the global economy, the corona pandemic is still causing great uncertainty in the markets and tending to review supply chains," said Chamber of Commerce Vice President Willem van der Schalk.

Market developments and investments with the aim of saving costs do not currently provide any major incentives for foreign investments.

In addition to the pandemic, the reasons for this could be “the significantly increased freight rates in sea freight traffic and the lack of availability of empty containers”.
