A number of senior officials during the era of former Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz appeared on Tuesday before the Public Prosecution Office of the Court of Nouakchott on charges related to corruption.

Among the suspects, former President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, former heads of government and ministers, in addition to other former officials and businessmen.

The report of a parliamentary investigation committee referred to issues of corruption and waste of public money during the administration of public deals that took place during the era of Ould Abdel Aziz.

The former Mauritanian president refuses to cooperate in the framework of the ongoing judicial investigations, claiming that he enjoys immunity in accordance with Article 93 of the Mauritanian Constitution.

On the other hand, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Al-Ghazwani dismissed the Minister-General of the Government, Ja Mukhtar Mallal, from his post on Tuesday, after his name was mentioned in corruption cases.

This came in a presidential decree carried by the official Mauritanian News Agency, which also included the appointment of Diallo Amadou Samba as Minister-General of the Government, replacing Lag Mokhtar Mallal.
