A demonstration against “

police abuses

” was held in the Athens suburb of Nea Smyrni, at the same place where a video that went viral in Greece was shot this weekend.

The images showed the muscular clubbing of a young man by a police officer, for no apparent reason, during a control of the containment measures.

In response, several thousand people took to the streets at the end of the afternoon to express their dissatisfaction.

But around 7 p.m., at nightfall, violence began when a group of about 200 hooded people attacked the police station in this supposedly quiet neighborhood.

The rioters in particular threw stones and Molotov cocktails, to which water cannons and tear gas responded.

The hooded demonstrators also attacked some journalists and photographers present on the spot.

In the evening, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis intervened during a short televised address to call for "

calm

 " and "

restraint

", after an outbreak of fever also condemned by the opposition parties.
