Berne (dpa) - The five-year renovation of the naval sailing training ship “Gorch Fock” is on the home straight.

The three-master is to be lowered from the land into the water using a special device this Wednesday morning at the Lürssen shipyard in Berne, Lower Saxony (Wesermarsch district).

The ship is then towed around twelve kilometers up the Weser to the Lürssen shipyard in Lemwerder for the final equipment.

The "Gorch Fock" is to be handed over to the Navy on May 31st.

The year-long general overhaul was marked by breakdowns and exorbitant price increases before Lürssen took over the work in October 2019.

Originally, ten million euros were budgeted for the renovation - this ultimately turned into 135 million euros.
