Düsseldorf (dpa) - After the forced Corona break, the exhibition on the 90th birthday of ZERO artist Heinz Mack will open this Wednesday (March 10) in the Düsseldorf Art Palace, subject to conditions.

Because of the lockdown, the show will start about a month later than planned and will run until May 30th.

Mack turned 90 on Monday and opened the exhibition digitally in a live stream.

The presentation of around 100 works, some of which occupy space, is mainly dedicated to his early work from the 1950s to 1970s.

Among them are works that he has not seen himself for 70 years, said Mack on Monday evening in an artist talk with curator Heike van den Valentyn.

At the end of the 1950s, Mack co-founded the artist group ZERO, to which Otto Piene and Günther Uecker also belonged.

Mack's reliefs, grids and rotors from the ZERO era are classics of post-war art today.

Mack is also known for his steles and futuristic art projects in the desert and the Arctic.

An entire room of the exhibition is dedicated to his Sahara expeditions in the 1960s.

"I still like to do experiments because I like to be surprised," said Mack, who describes himself as a sculptor and painter.

His large-format, brightly colored, abstract paintings are also shown.

Mack does not see himself at the end of his creative power for a long time.

"As soon as I have a white canvas in front of me, the desire arises in me to animate this blank canvas."

Due to the Corona restrictions, visitors to the exhibition need time slot tickets, which can be booked online.

The website of the Kunstpalast was temporarily overloaded due to the large number of visitors.

A large exhibition on the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich can also be seen in the Kunstpalast until May 24th.
