Meinerzhagen (dpa / lnw) - An admirer of Anthony Hopkins from Meinerzhagen near Lüdenscheid has been brought to several thousand euros with a brazen Internet fraud.
The perpetrators pretended to be in close contact with the British actor on social media.
More and more messages supposedly went back and forth - until the Oscar winner allegedly needed money for a film.
The woman referred willingly and only later found out that she had been betrayed.
The perpetrators apparently became aware of them because they had a photo of Hopkins on Instagram with a heart symbol, the police said on Tuesday.
The police advise caution with so-called romance scammers (romantic scammers).
Images of stars are abundant on the Internet.
The perpetrators played a bad game with the feelings of others.
Sometimes they assume the identity of well-known actors.
Sometimes they only used someone else's photos.
Sometimes it already helps to google the alleged name of the chosen one - especially when it comes to contacts abroad.
Often the scammers didn't even bother to vary names.
