Berlin (dpa / bb) - In the first medical practices in Berlin, people are to be vaccinated against the corona virus with immediate effect.

From Tuesday on, around 100 practices will initially take part in a model project with the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KV).

From the second quarter, that is from April, vaccinations will be carried out across the board in medical practices, said health senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) on Tuesday on the RBB information radio.

The number of corona test centers will rise to 21 from this week, Kalayci said.

In addition, there would be test-to-go stations from pharmacies and private providers who would now get involved.

In this way, 22,000 free tests are currently possible per day.

The number is expected to increase significantly.

There are currently 9,000 vaccinations per day in the vaccination centers and by mobile teams in Berlin.

Up to 20,000 vaccinations a day are possible, said Kalayci.

“Still, it's a good thing when family doctors can help out.

(...) I hear that the willingness is very high and that many general practitioners want to help. "

The number of practices will then increase, "and at some point we will have a system that vaccination takes place in the doctor's office".

According to the federal government's announcement, the number of vaccine doses available will increase significantly in the second quarter.

The Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians announced last week that the Astrazeneca vaccine would initially be used in medical practices and that further vaccines would follow.

Who will be vaccinated is decided according to the requirements of the vaccination ordinance.

The 100 model practices invite patients who suffer from a corresponding chronic disease.

The ministers agreed on nationwide corona vaccinations in medical practices on Monday at the health ministers' conference.

The vaccine is to be delivered to practices in the normal way via wholesalers and pharmacies.

By Sunday, 2.5 million people in Germany had been fully vaccinated.

That's three percent of the population.

5.2 million people have received at least one dose of vaccine.

If there is enough vaccine, it could theoretically be possible, according to model calculations, to achieve full vaccination protection for the entire population by the beginning of August.
