Luxembourg (dpa) - After the Attert River in Luxembourg was polluted with large amounts of biomass wastewater, the local sport fishing association is assuming "one of the worst environmental disasters" in the neighboring country for years.

The Attert was "biologically dead for many kilometers," said board member Claude Strotz on Tuesday of the German press agency in Trier.

"And badly damaged over at least 15 kilometers."

There is a "massive fish death" - hundreds have already died.

According to the information, the reason for the pollution was a seepage fire a week ago in the biogas plant in Grendel, Belgium, a few hundred meters from the Luxembourg border.

"Hundreds of thousands of liters of liquid flowed from the system into the Attert," said Strotz.

The almost 40 kilometer long Attert has its source in Belgium and mostly flows through Luxembourg.

"Most of the dead fish we found are graylings and trout," said Strotz.

There are also perch, pike and frogs.

After the accident one should have acted faster, said Strotz, who is also the spokesman for the police in Luxembourg.

For example, one should have prevented the process in the Attert "by all means".
