Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) has retrospectively admitted mistakes in the education policy of his green-red predecessor government.

CDU top candidate Susanne Eisenmann (CDU) accused Kretschmann at a speech duel in the "Südwest Presse" for the state election on Tuesday evening that the coalition with the SPD (2011-2016) had done too little to prevent the current teacher shortage.

Kretschmann replied that at the time he had relied on figures from the State Statistical Office, which had forecast an enormous decline in the number of students.

However, immigration from European countries was underestimated.

This actually led to bad planning.

"I have to admit, I was the bad guy," he said.

However, the policy was corrected immediately when it became clear that the numbers were incorrect.

Eisenmann replied that the retirement wave was more decisive for the shortage of teachers than the number of students.
