Hamburg (dpa) - Wine is to be grown again at Hamburg's St. Pauli Landungsbrücken.

The decision to rebuild the vineyard on Sintfang, which was cleared two years ago, is part of the construction project to revitalize the Old Elbe Park, said a spokeswoman for the city council on Monday.

The vineyard was donated to Parliament in 1995 by the hosts of the "Stuttgart Wine Village".

In 2019 he had to make way for construction work at Landungsbrücken station - the future was uncertain at the time.

The new vines are a gift from the state of Baden-Württemberg, said the spokeswoman.

The «Bild» newspaper had previously reported on it.

"Our vineyard and the traditional autumn harvest have developed into a little" hamburgers "over the past few decades," said Mayor Carola Veit.

«There are many inquiries about it.

When it actually starts again, of course, depends on the construction progress. "

In autumn, the area will be handed over to the citizens by the district office.

Then follow the processing of the soil.

The vines should be used no later than the spring of next year, it said.

It will then take at least three to four years before the first harvest.

The Stuttgart winemaker Fritz Currle will also look after the new vines together with volunteer winemakers from Hamburg.

In contrast to the first vineyard, where there were vines of the “Regent” and “Phoenix” varieties, the new one will only have the red “Regent” grapes.

Selected guests of Hamburg, to whom the city is giving away the rarity, can enjoy the «Stintfang Cuvées».
