Frankfurt (dpa / lhe) - real estate, company shares, cars, land or savings books: the state of Hesse inherited more than 917,000 euros from deceased residents in 2020.

In total, the land was used as an inheritance in 991 cases, the responsible regional tax office in Frankfurt announced at the request of the German Press Agency.

In the previous year it was almost three times as much at more than 2.5 million euros.

However, the administrative costs incurred have not yet been deducted from the 2020 and 2019 surpluses.

According to the management, it is not possible to say how high an average inheritance is for the country, as the individual cases vary considerably.

They ranged, for example, from over-indebted or ailing properties to valuable shares in companies that could be sold.

When the land inherits is recorded in the civil code.

«If there is no relative, spouse or life partner of the deceased at the time of the inheritance, the person inherits the country in which the testator had his last place of residence at the time of the inheritance or, if no such person can be ascertained, his usual place of residence.

Incidentally, the federal government inherits », it says there in paragraph 1936. However, for 30 years the state will initially only take over the inheritance as a placeholder.

During this period, a previously not found, true heir can come forward and make a claim.

"The length of time until the land is established as an inheritance after a corresponding death varies from case to case," says the Oberfinanzdirektion.

"This depends on the individual circumstances, it can be the case just a few weeks after death or even decades later."

If no one was found as an heir within a period appropriate to the circumstances, the probate court could determine that apart from the tax authorities there was no person entitled to inherit.

In some cases, however, it can take some time before money actually flows.

As a rule, a payout does not take place, said the Oberfinanzdirektion.

Rather, it usually has to be dealt with first.

This means: real estate or material assets have to be disposed of, accounts closed, possible legal disputes brought to an end and possible liabilities paid.
