The super election year begins with the state elections in Baden-Württemberg.

Winfried Kretschmann wants to try again, for Susanne Eisenmann it is the first time.

The CDU Minister of Education challenges the Green Prime Minister in the Baden-Württemberg state elections on March 14th.

Five years ago, he brought the CDU from the opposition to the cabinet table.

Now it could also be that the CDU will end up empty-handed and green-black will give way to a “traffic light coalition”.

Around 7.7 million people are

eligible to vote

on March 14

, including around 500,000 first-time voters.

In 2016, the turnout was 70.4 percent, at that time 22 parties were allowed to vote.

However, not every party usually runs in all constituencies.

In the upcoming election, 21 parties will run.

The parties can submit their nominations for the constituencies up to January 14, two months before the election.

The current state parliament has 143 members.

The 16th electoral term ends on April 30, 2021. The newly elected state parliament will therefore meet for the first time in May 2021 for its constituent session.

Baden-Württemberg: What is the situation like?

So far, five parties have been represented in the state parliament.

The two government factions have 90 seats (Greens 47, CDU 43).

The SPD has 19 seats, the FDP 12 and the AfD after several withdrawals 15. Another 7 members are non-attached.

In the latest poll by the Wahlen research group, the Greens were 35 percent, the CDU was 24 percent.

The CDU recently lost significantly in the polls, also because of the Corona management, which was perceived as insufficient by the public.

The SPD came to 10 percent - the party around top candidate Andreas Koch is one percentage point behind the AfD (11 percent).

The Baden-Württemberg FDP came up with 10 percent, the Left would fail with 3 percent at the five percent hurdle.

It is quite possible that the Greens will be able to choose a coalition partner in the end.

It would certainly be enough for green-black, black-green would only be an option if the CDU were successful.

However, neither party is united by a passion.

The preferred constellation of the Greens leadership is an alliance with the SPD, but so far there is no majority for it.

Therefore, it could also amount to a “traffic light coalition” made up of the Greens, the SPD and the FDP.

Nobody wants to work with the AfD.

Special right to vote in Baden-Württemberg

In the state elections in Baden-Württemberg, the voter only has

one vote

.

A second vote does not know the right to vote.

The candidate who receives the most votes in the 70 constituencies moves into parliament in Stuttgart.

Another 50 seats are second mandates.

They go to the candidates who, although they did not win their constituency, received the most votes in one of the four administrative districts compared to other candidates in their party.

This is the so-called second count.

The parties in the constituencies are responsible for putting together candidates for the state election.

A reform of the state election law failed under Green and Black.

How does the postal vote work?

Voting notifications will be given no later than three weeks before the election.

So if you haven't received anything by February 21st, you should get information from the municipal administration.

Anyone wishing to vote in another voting area of the constituency or by postal vote must apply for a ballot from February 8th.

Postal voters will then receive the ballot and other attachments.

If you vote at the polling station, the voting slip is only available there.

State election 2016 - This is how the last election went

In the 2016 election, the Greens won a whopping 43 direct mandates (out of 70).

A political earthquake, because the Christian Democrats had always been the determining political force in all previous elections.

Now the CDU only had 22 direct mandates.

The AfD - which was here for the first time - won two direct mandates.

In the last election on March 13, 2016, the Greens prevailed as the strongest force.

The results of the last state election at a glance:

  • CDU:

    27.00%

  • SPD:

    12.70%

  • Greens:

    30.30%

  • Left:

    2.90%

  • FDP:

    8.30%

  • AfD:

    15.10%

Instead of continuing a green-red government alliance, this time the party around Winfried Kretschmann entered into a green-black alliance.

Super election year 2021

In Baden-Württemberg, voting takes place on the same day as in Rhineland-Palatinate.

That's not all: In the course of the year, the Thuringians, Saxony-Anhalter, Berliners and the people of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also determine their state parliaments.

The high point of the super election year is the federal election on September 26th.
