It was during an inspection on 26 February that the municipality's environmental inspectors discovered a number of shortcomings in the routines for packing lunch boxes for the elderly in the municipality.

The decision states that the premises are not adapted to handle unpackaged food.

The premises are also used as storage and there is also no possibility for hand washing, which is a requirement for this type of activity.

The handling is also criticized for the refrigerated food being packed at room temperature, which means that the cooling chain is broken, which can make the food unsafe.

The routines for the use of the packing machine have also not been followed, according to the inspection protocol.

Prohibits packing of lunch boxes

Due to this, the environment and building committee in Vaggeryd municipality decided to immediately ban the packing of lunch boxes in the premises.

"The Environment and Building Committee assesses that the shortcomings noted above, together with the fact that the business is aimed at a sensitive consumer group, are so serious that food safety cannot be ensured," they write in their decision.

Is it common for you to find such major shortcomings?

- No, it is not, says Thomas Andersson.

What happens now?

- They are working to remedy the shortcomings fully.

New inspection in a couple of weeks

The business has now packed new lunch boxes that have been sent for analysis to see if they are food safe.

- It takes two weeks before we get answers to those analyzes and after that we will do a new inspection on site, says Thomas Andersson.

In the meantime, the municipality may arrange food deliveries to the elderly who receive lunch boxes in other ways.

SVT has asked the social director and chairman of the social committee, who are responsible for the activities, for a comment.
