Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A new data portal should make North Rhine-Westphalia more attractive as a tourist location.

Economics Minister Andreas Pinkwart (FDP) presented the data hub “Dein NRW” on Monday in Düsseldorf and called it a “breakthrough for the medium-sized tourism industry in our state”.

It is about information about excursion destinations, hiking routes and restaurants, which are bundled on the website «discover.nrw-tourismus.de» - citizens know what is nearby or at the travel destination.

Such offers are already available online, but “Dein NRW” should be particularly comprehensive and precise.

At the moment 1,500 data sets are freely available, by the end of the year there should be 15,000 - there is also information on accommodation and local transport, for example.

Separately from the preparation for the citizen, companies are provided with a steadily growing data pool that search engines, app operators and tourism providers can access free of charge.

For example, a navigation provider can use audio files from the hub for tourist attractions - that improves its service and allows users to discover the tourist attractions of NRW, according to the logic behind it.

Pinkwart pointed out that nowadays travelers want to get a comprehensive impression of their destination on the Internet long before they leave.

The data hub provides important information for this.

"We would like to give our attractive tourist offer even greater visibility."

The project will help “make private and business travelers want to travel to North Rhine-Westphalia via all channels,” said Pinkwart.

In contrast to websites such as “tripadvisor”, the hub does not rely on data from end consumers - i.e. not on the guest who rates a restaurant after their visit - but on information from the tourism and event industry.

In addition, the platform should show how heavily frequented sights or excursion routes are - according to Pinkwart, an important characteristic in times of Corona.

However, there are still data protection and technical issues to be clarified.
