Seelow (dpa / bb) - After a new case of bird flu in Brandenburg, around 10,000 turkeys were killed in the Märkisch-Oderland district.

The ninth case of avian influenza within a few weeks was detected in a commercial poultry business, the consumer protection ministry announced on Monday in Potsdam.

There was an increased number of dead animals in the turkey population.

An outbreak in a turkey population in the Prignitz only became known on Tuesday last week.

Around 18,000 animals had to be killed there.

In the event of avian influenza, certain protective measures come into force.

This includes a restricted area with a radius of at least three kilometers around the stock of the outbreak and an observation area with a radius of at least ten kilometers.

The veterinary office of the district of Märkisch-Oderland ordered the steps according to the Ministry of Health.

Since mid-December of last year, animals have been compulsory in risk areas.

Avian influenza, also known colloquially as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease for poultry and other birds.

According to the ministry, it can quickly reach epidemic proportions in poultry flocks.

The H5N8 bird flu virus is considered harmless to humans.
