Kannapolis (dpa) - Mick Schumacher will complete the first official test kilometers in the new car of the Haas Formula 1 team.

The racing team, headquartered in Kannapolis, North Carolina, announced that the 21-year-old debutant will initially drive the VF-21 on Friday at the Bahrain International Circuit.

In the afternoon his Russian team-mate Nikita Masepin - also a newcomer to the motorsport premier class - will be behind the wheel.

The main thing is to feel even more comfortable in the car, said Mick Schumacher in an interview with the team.

The seat, the seating position, how the car feels on the track and the work with the team - Mick Schumacher has a lot to do in the only three days of test drives on the circuit in the Sakhir desert.

"I'm looking forward to finding out what we need to be ready for the first race," he said.

The season opener will take place just two weeks later on March 28th - also on the Bahrain International Circuit.

The car was assembled at the team's second headquarters in Banbury, England.

Due to restrictions during the corona pandemic, the Ferrari engine will be started for the first time during the tests.

"If the Italian engineers and mechanics had traveled to Great Britain, they would have had to be in quarantine," explained team boss Günther Steiner.
